Practice of Electro-Magnetics

A number of commercial products and services is emerging on the market. This is the result of promising experiments with Electro Magnetic Techniques in farm or garden. A wide variety of techniques is offered, for improving growth, treatment and prevention of diseases in livestock and the disinfection of greenhouse soil, and so on. Examples and experiments will be shared on this website.

The medical sector has explored much more the use of electromagnetic techniques, for example for body scans and cancer radiation. The agricultural sector might well be legging a dozen years behind the medical sector.

Which is remarkable, in view of the many electromagnetic facts in daily life.

  • Radio broadcasting and smart phone communication.
  • Micro-wave in the kitchen.
  • Infra-red heating of your house.
  • Visible light makes our plants grow.
  • Ultra violet radiation of the sun –UV – burns your skin.
  • Very high energy X-rays against cancer in hospitals

Such very practical applications of electro-magnetism in daily life indeed challenge the food sector to also explore this broad spectrum of frequencies for the practice of food growing.

·      Fungi do not like ultra-violet light. It disinfects.

·      Insects react on infra-red frequencies.

·      Mice do not like frequencies around 29.000 Hz and look for other refuge.

The EM SPECTRUM Picture

The electromagnetic spectrum covers the entire reach of vibrations. It includes low frequencies like the audible sound (20 Hz – 15.000 Hz, these frequencies have very long wavelengths), via the radio and microwave frequencies and the visible light (wavelength between 0,7-0,4 nanometer for red and blue light), until extremely high X-ray frequencies for radiation of cancer in hospitals (the burning energy of these very short wavelengths is expressed in millions of electronVolts).

Recently the understanding of the effects and impact on plants and animals is rapidly increasing. Some examples.

Microwave to disinfect greenhouse soil

Picture a big microwave slowly moving forward on a caterpillar, and you have the Agritron.

“Golden medal for Agritron.”: The super microwave …. has won a golden medal for the best innovation at the French Horticulture Fair SIVAL in Angers in 2007. According to its constructors, during tests the machine showed an effectivity of 92%.”

The prototype Agritron with 150 microwave tubes –designed by Koppert – moves at roughly 1 meter per minute and cooks everything containing water, that is bacteria, insects, worms etc. This technique avoids steaming the soil –costing a lot of energy – and it avoids chemical means –often polluting water around the greenhouse. Indeed it shows several positive effects on the environment. The question with this technique however remains: how do you prevent to also kill all organic life like worms you need for soil fertility.

Koppert Machines B.V. is established the village of Monster in “Het Westland”, a very important greenhouse area in the Netherlands.

Curing Mastitis in Dairy

Researchers test Electro Magnetic Fields (EMF) to treat inflammation of the udder of dairy cows (this inflammation is called mastitis).  “Our goal is to examine how properly selected magnetic fields can decrease the potential of development of infectious diseases in farm animals.”

The technology in fact is simple. They use less then 500 Watt electricity. Attach some small boxes on the wall of your barn. Or put some wires around the boxes of calves or pigs, under the mat in the box of dairy cows, or put a frame above or under the cage of chicken. These wires function as coils and create a magnetic field.  The treatment is totally automatic, e.g. half an hour per night and remains below all security norms.

Not many problems have arisen for animals nor humans. Yet, it is still unclear if any long term effects could be expected.

The experiment tests the hypothesis that low frequency electromagnetic field (LF EMF) treatment can stimulate an immune response. The treatment might create danger signals in the cells which are necessary to trigger an immune reaction in the presence of pathogens.

Lower mortality of Goldfish.

Experiments with goldfish demonstrate a strong decrease of mortality caused by infectious disease (gill parasites and accompanying microbial infections). In the graph below the red and blue lines indicate the different effects of non-treatment and EMF-treatment. This result is consistent with the idea that the exposure to EMF increases the strength of the immune reaction, so that a larger percentage of animals sufficiently combats the disease early enough to prevent disease to develop and to return to health.
